ZOOLOGY – 2005, PAPER – II, SECTION – A,SECTION – B

                            Time allowed: three hours     maximum marks: 200
Candidates should attempt questions 1 and 5 which are compulsory, and Any Three of the following questions selecting at least ONE question from each section.

SECTION –A
1.       Distinguish between any four of the following (each answer may be in about 150 words):

(a)    Primary and Secondary iysosome
(b)   Non-overlapping and Overlapping code
(c)    Klinefelter’s and turner’s syndrome
(d)   Allopatric and sympatric speciation
(e)   Genus and species

2.       (a) Describe how the fluid mosaic model of cell membrane is suited to its functions.

3.       Explain the structure and role of plasmids and cosmids in cloning.

4.       Write notes on the following:
(a)    Methods of speciation
(b)   Reasons for discontinuous distribution of animals
(c)    Binomial nomenclature
(d)   Five-kingdom system of classification of whittaker

SECTION – B

5.       Distinguish between any four of the following (each answer may be in about 150 words):
(a)    Lipids and Fatty acids
(b)   Impulse conduction within a Nerve and Between Nerves
(c)    Neoteny and Neoplasia
(d)   Induction and Invagination
(e)   Role of hormones in pregnancy and Parturition

6.       Describe the structure of the different types of RNA. Add a note on their functions.

7.       Describe two different examples for two different mechanisms of actions of hormones.

8.       Write notes on the following:
(a)    In vitro fertilization
(b)   Role of cytoplasm in development
(c)    Role of ecdysone and juvenile hormone in insect metamorphosis
(d)   Influence of yolk on cleavage patterns

1.       Write briefly on any Four of the following in not more than 150 words each:
(a)    Radiate and its position in animal kingdom
(b)   Compare the heart of frog with that of bird
(c)    Formation of coral reefs
(d)   Thyroid and its hormone
(e)   Nematocysts – structure & mechanism of action

2.       (a) Discuss the general characteristics of Peripatus and comment on its affinities.
(b) Describe the salient features of phylum Mollusca and classify the same up to classes citing distinguishing characters and examples.

3.       (a) Give an account of the larval forms of Echinodermata and add a note on their significance.
(b)   Describe the general features and life history of Fasciola and add a note on its relation to man.

4.       Give an illustrative account of the organs, mechanism and physiology of respiration in fishes.

SECTION –B

5.       Write notes on any FOUR of the following in not more than 150 words each:-
(a)    Biological rhythms
(b)   Role of pheromones in alarm spreading
(c)    Cholera- its vector, pathogens and prevention
(d)   Chi square test
(e)   Integrated pest management.

6.       Describe the detail the ecological succession and add a note on its significance.

7.       (a)  What is polymorphism? Explain this phenomenon with reference to termites and honey Bess. Add a note on its significance.
                                       (b)  Explain how Silk is cultured in India and add a note on its economic importance.

8.       (a)  Give an account of the principle and working of the transmission election microscopy.
(b)  Citing suitable examples explain how the measures of central tendency and applied in biostatistics.
