ANIMAL HUSBANDRY & VETERINARY SCIENCE – 2006 PAPER- I

 Time allowed:   Three Hours                    maximum Marks: 200

Candidates should attempt Question no. 1 and 5 which are compulsory, and any THREE of the remaining questions, selecting at least ONE question from each section.

SECTION A

1.       Write short notes on any four of the following in not more than 150 words each:
(a)    Probiotics, their mode of action and usefulness
(b)   Breeding plan for egg type poultry production
(c)    Dairy farming cis-a-vis Mixed farming
(d)   Role of cross- breeding in developing new breeds / strains
(e)   Trace minerals in nutrition of growing animals
2.       Describe the sequence of events along a with details for improvement of cattle in India. What were the shortcomings and constraints in not achieving the targeted level of milk production?
3.       (a) Describe the suitable management practices to be followed for Heifers and pregnant stock in a commercial unit.
(c)    What will you feed daily to a breeding bull of five years of age which is being used for semen collection for A. I.?
4.       Describe in detail method of meat inspection in Goat. How will you differentiate meat of goats form that of sheep?

5.       Write short notes on any four of the following in not more than 150 words each:
(a)    Development of economical ration  for rabbits
(b)   Construction of selection Index and its use
(c)    Female reproductive organs, their components functions
(d)   Factors affecting semen quality
(e)   Nucleus Breeding Schemes

6.       What are the hormones necessary for initiation and maintenance of pregnancy, lactation and parturition in dairy cows? Explain their role.

7.       (a) Describe the steps for amelioration of Heat stress through suitable shelter systems under rural conditions.
                (b) How do animals keep their body temperature constant under cold environmental conditions?

8.       Enumerate the steps to be taken for Quality semen production. What are the factors affecting semen quality ‘in vivo’ and ‘in vitro’?

SECTION A
1.       Answer any four of the following in about 150 words:
(a)    What is progeny test? Discuss its significance in plant breeding.
(b)   Define emasculation. Describe various methods of emasculation.
(c)    What is inbreeding? Summaries the effects of inbreeding.
(d)   Describe in brief the merits and demerits of mass selection.
(e)   Incorporation of novel genes through genetic engineering

2.       (a) Define synthetic variety. What measures would you suggest for the improvement of the performance of synthetic varieties?
                               (b) Briefly discuss the factors influencing photosynthesis.
                              (C) What are phytohormones? Describe in brief the role of gibberellins in plants.
                              (d)Define hybrid. Give the merits and demerits of hybrids.

(d)   Diseases of tomato.

4.       Give scientific name, nature of damage, life  cycle and control measures of the following pests:

6.       Define the term training. Give basic principles of training and explain in brief its need for extension worker.

7.       (a) What do you understand by social forestry? State the advantages of social forestry.
(b) Explain the characteristics of different problem solid. Suggest the ways for reclamation of problem soils.

8.       Discuss the scope of micro-irrigation in Indian Agriculture. State the types of micro-irrigation and explain merits and demerits of drip irrigation system.

6.       (a) Describe the biochemical process by which two molecules of ATP are produced from one molecule of glucose. Mention the names of the participating enzymes.
                          (b)  Discuss the role of mitochondrion for Pyruvic acid oxidation.

7.       (a)  What are the physiological changes associated with plant senescence? Add a note on senescence – retarding hormones.
                          (b) Enumerate the ethylene-induced responses n plants. What are the commercial used of ethylene?

8.       (a) discuss the causes and consequences of global warming
                          (b) What is the significance of ozone layer? What are the contributing factors for its depletion and what can be the possible consequences?

AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING – 2005 PAPER- II, SECTION A

 Time allowed: Three Hours     Maximum Marks: 200
Candidates should attempt questions 1 and 2 which are compulsory, and any THREE of the following questions selecting at least ONE questions from each section.

SECTION A

1.       Answer any FOUR of the following each not exceeding 150 words:

(a)    A tractor weighing 1600 kg is climbing up a slope of 10.05 per cent with a drawbar pull of 274.1 kg parallel to the slope. The travel speed along the slope is 3 kmph and the coefficient of rolling resistance is one per cent. Determine the power required for moving up of the tractor.
(b)   A cultivator’s ahs a draft of 270 kg and operating speed of 5 kilometers per hour. Total width of the cultivators is 180 cm and its field efficiency is 80 per cent. Calculate the following :

(i)                  Horsepower
(ii)                Time to till one hectare.

(c)    Write general energy equation. With specific reference to internal combustion engines, find an expression for energy change of a constant volume process.
(d)   Define or explain briefly the following :
(i)                  Torque rise
(ii)                Power factor

(e)   Write down the following :
(i)                  Minimum wind velocity for working of a windmill.
(ii)                Material used to make solar cells
(iii)               Upper safe exposure level to noise for continuous operations
(iv)              Furrow opener suitable for mulching
(v)                Main combustible constituent of biogas

2.        (a) Describe type of furrow cross-sections obtained while using:
(i)                  Mouldboard ploughs
(ii)                Disk ploughs
(iii)               Indigenous ploughs

                                                           (b) Explain with the help of a diagram, the working principle of fuel supply. Write importance of a fuel mixture and air cleaner.
                                                    (C) Describe some common motor troubles and their remedies. Give points of considerations for the selection of electric motors.

3.       (a) Suggest improved farm machines to harvest (i) Maize   (ii) Wheat,   (iii) Potato   (iv) Napier grass, (v) Lucern,   (vi) Jowar (Sorghum). Explain the reasons for your recommendations.
(b) Explain with the help of a diagram the working principles of fuel supple. Write importance of a fuel mixture and air cleaner.
                                                            (C)  With a neat sketch, describe the construction of a DC generator. How does it differ from that of a DC motor?

4.       (a) Describe various devices used in seed metering. How is the seed metered in –
(i)                  A seed drill;
(ii)                A planter;
(iii)               The seeding attachment of the cultivator?
(b)   A farmer has to harvest 2.5 hectares of grass by means of a 2m mower being operated at 4 kmph. How much time it will take to harvest the same if the field efficiency of mower is taken as 80 per cent? Explain the terms registration and alignment as applied to the cutter bar of a mower, and state how these adjustments are done.
(c) Describe the construction and operation of a shunt motor starter. Draw a diagram of all its internal connections’.

AGRICULTURE – 2005, PAPER-II, SECTION A,

Candidates should attempt questions 1 and 5 which are compulsory, and Any Three of the following questions selecting at least ONE question from each section.

SECTION A

1.       Answer any four of the following in about 150 words each:
(a)    Discuss merits and demerits of mass selection. Name crops in which this method has been successfully applied.
(b)   Differentiate between incompatibility and sterility. Name crops in which any other of the two systems has been noticed.
(c)    Whether plant propagation and vegetative reproduction are similar or differ with each other? Elaborate your answer.
(d)   Define bio-technology. Give its role in plant breeding. Name fruit crops in which this technology has been successfully used.
(e)   Explain cell organelles giving their function separately.

2.       (a) define cultivators, clone, inhibition, imbibitions and crossing –over
                     (b) Describe factors that affect photosynthesis in plants.
Give aerobic and anaerobic respiration in plants. In case of failure of this mechanism, what would happen?

(ii)                Method  of transplanting
(iii)               Fertilizer (NPK) requirement per hectare
(iv)              No. of irrigations required
(v)                Fruit yield per hectare
(a)    Discuss the tomato verities recommended for sowing with yield potential
(b)   Do you feel that study of plant physiology is essential for developing forests? Elaborate your answer.
