Zoology – 2003, Paper – II ,SECTION B

Time Allowed: Three Hours   maximum marks: 200

Candidates should attempt Questions 1 and 5 which are compulsory and any THREE of the remaining question selecting at least ONE question from each Section.


SECTION B

5.       Distinguish between any four of the following (each answer may be in about 150 words):
(a)    Glycolysis and Citric acid cycle
(b)   Digestion in stomach and in intestine
(c)    Blastula of frog and of chick
(d)   Metamorphosis in insect and in frog
(e)   Starch and Glycogen

6.       What are enzymes? Explain their characteristics. Give the basis of their classification with appropriate example of each class.

7.       Explain the terms ‘resting’ and ‘action’ potentials Describe how a nerve impulse travels along a neuron mentioning roles of different ion channels and gates.

8.       With suitable examples discuss the roles of cytoplasm and nucleus in the process of early embryonic development.

(b)   Radiation and Chemical mutagenesis
(c)    Sympatric and Allopatric speciations
(d)   Missense and Nonsense mutations
(e)   Mitochondria and Chloroplasts

2.       Explain in details, with suitable diagrams the process of meiotic cell division with reference to a cell with 2 N=4. Give biological significance of meiosis.

3.       What is a person? Explain the structure and regulation of the lactose operon.

4.       Write notes on the following:

(a)    Haldane – Oparin hypothesis on origin of life
(b)   Evolution of elephant
(c)    Five kingdom classification and its basis.
(d)   Hardy –Weinberg law- its proof and applications.

SECTION B

5.       Write notes on any four of the following in not more than 150 words each:
(a)    Predator
(b)   Components of ecosystem
(c)    Sitophilus oryzae
(d)   Null hypothesis
(e)   Pollution and its impact on biosphere

6.       Give an account of natural resources, explain the importance of their conservation and discuss critically the present position of wild life conservation in India.

7.       (a) Discuss the role of insect vectors in spreading epidemics in man. Add a note on preventive measures.
                    (b) Discuss the environmental cues that help in bird migration.

8.       (a) Describe the principles and applications of flame photometry.
                    (b) What are the statistical parameters to be considered in designing laboratory and field experiments?

Compulsory should attempt Questions 1 and 4 which are compulsory, and any THREE of the remaining questions selecting at least ONE question from each Section.

SECTION A

1.       Write briefly on any Four of the following in not more than 150 words each:
(a)    Bilateral symmetry
(b)   Compare the brain of fish with that of mammal.
(c)    Trochophore larva
(d)   Gonadal hormones in man
(e)   Structure and functions of uriniferous fubules.

2.       (a) Discuss the affinities and phylogenetic considerations of Hemichordata.
                    (b) Give the salient features of the phylum Annelida and classify the same up to classes citing distinguishing characters and examples.

3.       (a) Give a detailed account of reproduction in Protozoa.
                    (b) Discuss the salient features and canal system in sponges.

4.       Describe with illustrations the structure and working of mammalian eye.
