FORESTRY- 2004,PAPER –I, SECTION A

Time Allowed: Three Horus                 Maximum Marks: 200
Candidates should attempt Questions I and 5 which are compulsory and any THREE of the remaining questions, selecting at least ONE question from each Section.

SECTION A

1.       answer any four of the following (answer should no exceed mote than 150 words for each question)
(A)   What is the criterion to select number of clones and their deployment in plantation forestry?
(B)   How willow cultivation is life line in cold desert areas of the country?
(C)   Describe storage behavior of recalcitrant seeds and name seven tree species producing seeds of this category.
(D)   Why does forest plantation fail?
(E)    Describe the storage methods of recalcitrant seeds and name seven tree species fall under this category.

2.       (a) Discuss the term site quality and describe the basis of its classification.
(b)What are the different uses of vegetative propagation? Name the five different examples of topophysis.

3.       (a) Describe briefly clear felling system with its merits and demerits.
      (b) Write the importance of mangrove forests and methods of rehabilitation of degraded mangrove forests.

4.       Describe the silviculture of any FOUR species:

(a)    Gmelina arborea.
(b)   Cedrus deodara.
(c)    Santalum album.
(d)   Populous spp.
(e)   Tectona grandis.

SECTION –B

5.       Answer any FOUR of the following (Answer should not exceed more than 150 words for each question):-
(a)    Describe the different methods of plus tree selection in uneven aged forests.
(b)   Explain about water pollution and methods of their control with main emphasis on phytoremediation.
(c)    Suggest practical methods for the reclamation of saline and alkaline soils.
(d)   What do you mean by ethnobotany, its importance and practice in nature conservation by tribal people?
(e)   Write a note on Environmental Impact Assessment.
(f)     Why the provenance testing is pre-requisite before taking genetic improvement of any given species? How it can be done?

6.       (a) Describe the role of NGOs in JFM with special reference to biodiversity conservation. Justify with suitable example.
     (b)    What do you mean by shifting cultivation and improved fallows and its management under agroforestry system?

7.       (a) Describe the basis of land classification in brief for watershed management.
       (b)    Explain the importance and different ways of carbon sequestration in terrestrial ecosystem.

8.       Write notes on any FOUR of the following:
(a)    Importance and types of heritability. How it can be increased?
(b)   Specific combining ability and its utility in tree improvement.
(c)    Breeding value.
(d)   Acid rain.
(e)   Selection for several traits.
(f)     Hybrid vigour and its utility in tree breeding.

SECTION –A
1.       Write critical notes, within 150 words each. On any four of the following:

ANIMAL HUSBANDRY AND VETERINARY SCIENCE – 2003

Candidates should attempt Questions 1 and 5 which are compulsory, and ay THREE of the remaining questions selecting at least ONE question from each Section.

SECTION A

1.       Write short notes on any four of the following  in not more than 150 words:
(a)    Feed additives and feed supplements
(b)   Vitamin A and Vision
(c)    TDN and starch equivalent. Write their relative efficiency.
(d)   What is hay silage and how are they made?
(e)   Hormonal control of mammary gland of cow.

2.       Classify mineral required by animals. Discuss the factors affecting absorption of calcium and phosphorus. Write the deficiency symptoms of calcium and phosphorus. In dairy animals. Discuss the role of Vitamin D in calcium and phosphorus assimilation.

3.       (a) Give a critical review of various feeding standards along with their merits and limitations.
(b) Discuss various methods of measuring feed energy.

4.       Discuss the following:
(a)    Structure of female genetalia of a buffalo and write the function of each organ.
(b)   Metabolic disorders due to imbalance feeding.
(c)    Give composition of two prominent semen extenders commonly used.
(d)   Milk replacer and calf starter. Give on composition of each.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING- 2003 , PAPER –I, SECTION B

                            Time Allowed: Three Hours     maximum Marks: 200
Candidates should attempt Questions 1 and 5 which are compulsory, and any THREE of the remaining questions selecting at least ONE question from each Section. Assume suitable data. If considered necessary, and indicate the same clearly.
  
SECTION B

5.       Answer any four of the following:
(a)    Explain the phenomena of reverse osmosis. Discus the characteristics of membrane required for this process.

(b)   Discuss the failure of vessels based on theory of plasticity.

(c)    Name various types of heads commonly used in cylindrical vessels, along with their sketches and areas of application.

(d)   Determine an expression for frequency response of a transportation lag. Show it graphically also.

(e)   Discuss ratio control and its application in process industries. Give tow examples.

6.       (a) What is ultrafitration? Discuss the dependence of membrane permeation rate on applied pressure difference fed solute concentration and cross flow velocity for ultra filtration.

                        (b) Discuss low pressure distillation along with its application in industries.

                         (c)  Explain (i) membrane fouling and (ii) membrane selectivity in separation processes using membrane.
                         (d) Explain the working principle of dialysis.

7.       (a) Explain coate’s theoretical analysis for bending stress at the head-shell junction of a vessel.
                       (b) Discuss the design procedure of skirt supports for vertical vessels.

                       (c)  A process requires a shell to be designed to contain a working pressure of 200 MN/ m². The shell temperature is 400⁰ C. inside diameter and length of the shell have been estimated to be 500 mm and 4000 mm, respectively. If carbon steel having an allowable stresses of 10.40 x 10² MN/ m²is used as material of construction of the shell, determine suitable thickness of the shell.

8.       (a) What are various devices which can be used for absolute pressure measurement? Discuss any one of them which can be used with continuous recording system.

                       (b) Discuss two important characteristics of a control valve.

                       (c) Describe the procedure for the design of sampled data controller in a system.

                       (d) How do you find the frequency response of a PID controller? Explain it.

(a)    What is an incompressible fluid? Determine an expression for pressure drop in an incompressible fluid flowing in a pipe under the condition of laminar flow.

(b)   Discuss the working of a centrifugal pump along with its operational problems and remedial measures.

(c)    Describe the procedure to calculate number of equilibrium stages in the fractionation of a binary system by poncho- Savarit method.

(d)   Explain LMTD correction factor. How is it calculated in the case of multipass shell and tube heat exchangers?

(e)   Develop a relation between heat transfer coefficient and friction factor by using colburn analogy.

2.       (a) Discuss flow pattern caused by a turbine type impeller in an agitated tank and suggest ways to prevent swirling and vortex formation.

                      (b) Explain the principle of Pitot tube and its application. Also discuss how average velocity can be calculated?

                      (c)  Discuss the construction and operation of a notary drum filter. How is rate of filtration related to speed of rotation?

                     (d)  What is fluid energy mill? Explain its principle

3.       (a) Explain the term critical thickness of insulation Determine an expression for it for a spherical vessel.

                       (b) Saturated steam of atmospheric pressure condenses on a cold tube of 25 mm diameter and 1 m long. Determine per cent change in heat transfer rate if the orientation of tube is changed from horizontal to vertical.

                      (c) Compare forward feed double effect evaporator with backward feed double effect feed evaporator.
                      (d) Briefly discuss the procedure to calculate radiant heat load of an oil fired furnace.

4.       (a) Define diffusivity term. Discuss the method of measurement of diffusivity of a binary system in a laboratory.

                        (b) Describe the procedure to calculate minimum liquid gas ratio for absorbers.

                        (c) Discuss the working principle of a forced draft cooling tower.

                        (d) What are constant rate and falling rate periods in the drying of solids? Develop an expression for time of drying of a solid under falling rate period.
