BOTANY – 2003, PAPER- II, Section A

                             Time Allowed: Three Hours      Maximum marks: 200
Candidates should attempt Questions 1 and 5 which are compulsory, and any THREE of the remaining questions, selecting at least ONE question from each Section.

Section A
1.       Write short notes on any four of the following in about 150 words each:
(a)    Cell fractionation
(b)   MPF
(c)    Pseudoallelism
(d)   Nucleolus
(e)   Importance of apomixes in plant breeding

2.       (a) Enumerate various techniques used for gene mapping.
                         (b) ‘Recombination and independent assortment are dependent on the positions that the genes occupy.’ Justify this statement.

3.       (a) What are transgenic and how do they differ from recombinants?
                         (b)  What is BT cotton?
                         (c) Discuss the pros and cons of the use of transgenic crops.

4.       (a) What was the impact of the discovery of sex chromosomes on genetics?
                         (b) What is the balance concept of sex determination and how was the established?
